The word ‘exams’ makes our mind shriek a NOO, it brings us willies and makes us remind of the tensions of studying long portions of the hated chemistry and history textbooks, burning the midnight oil and then putting up all your hard work in a devil called exams where 3 hours go away by lightning speed. School exams were supposed to be those very serious times when we all had one little nerd inside us which used to unceremoniously wake up when the testing times came near. But exams at college have changed our perceptions about these scary tests, it has taught us how to study along with having fun, how to complete an entire 1000 page book the night before the exams and still come out of the class happily shouting, “Pass!”, college has taught us how even these tensed times can be the most memorable and it has taught us to be those tenacious engineers who if can fight against these huge books and courses on the last days, can fight against almost everything in life. Having recently given a horrendous mid semester exam, I laugh upon it and realize that these phases of my college life are going to be the most memorable ones. 🙂
When the time table gets put up on the block notice board, there accumulates a flock of people around, not to check out when does the exams start and how many days do we have for studying, but to check when do we finally become free and can plan out holidays and outings with friends. There does not exist even an iota of tension till it is the final week before the finals. And when it arrives, even magnetism or vectors become difficult to seep in; you can feel the incipient worry in the air, piles of huge textbooks and reference books start seeming claustrophobic , you feel sleepy all the time, even a wall seems so interesting and the most popular statement becomes, “Oh, I have not even started yet!”. Some of us had a habit to read in the fresh wee hours of the morning while some stretch sleeplessly till late nights to study. But at college, you read both in the morning and at night. There are no options left, passing is mandatory, an IF is too shameful and you start getting nightmares about it.
And when the exams finally arrive, it strikes how tough engineering is and how the fun and truancy all through the year is going to make you pay now. Toppers have their phones ringing all the time. “Can you please tell me the course? “is the hot-shot question everywhere. Entire chapters and sums get explained on whatsapp groups. By the end of the day, everyone is calculating which chapters to leave and what are the most important topics to pass. Stretching sleeplessly in the night has no limits. Calls and messages are frequent even at 4 am. Half of the chapters seem out-of-the-blue and it is puzzling where exactly we were when this was done in class? Coffee and biscuits becomes the staple diet. Study leaves are for sleeping. The situation is so pathetic that we find ourselves laughing on us. The entire night we study like we have never before. And by the morning, how much be the course, we reach the exam hall with the satisfaction that we will manage to get decent marks. Then what happens inside is magic. The engineer’s magic! 😛
It is said, only an engineer knows how much he knows! But never challenge an engineer because exams and marks can never become his hurdle. He can shine out of the most difficult situations and manage even the most impossible tasks. An engineer may be a topper or a 5-point-someone, what matters is how gutsy and determined he is. Cheers to our spirit, People! Because that has made all the difference! 🙂
